City of Merida Museum

The cultural heritage that is housed in the beautiful and majestic Ex-Federal Post Office palace, shows the historical development of the city of Merida. This important building, inaugurated in 1908 by then governor Enrique Muñoz Aristequi, has special architectural characteristics that make is historically valuable. With French tendencies, it shows there was a definite economical well-being at the beginning of the 1900’s – the era of the green gold – the henequen fiber. Since June 29th, 2007, this building now houses the City of Merida Museum.

Permanent Shows
Pre-Hispanic Merida: In this room you will find pieces showing the Mayan culture from the pre-Hispanic city of Th’o.
The Colony or New-Hispanic Merida: These pieces are related to the Spanish conquest of Merida and the founding of Merida.
19th Century and early 20th Century Merida: Pieces related to the economical boom, the development of the city and the henequen haciendas.
20th Century Merida: Objects and pieces related to modern Merida.

Newspaper and Bibliographical heritage
This space was made possible through institutional and public donations. Books and specialized periodical publications from the city of Merida, with diverse themes ranging from the Mayan culture to the present day Merida and the state are housed here.

Guided Tours
With reservations and a minimum of 10 people and maximum of 30, you can ask for guided tours of the museum from Tuesday to Friday from 9 AM to 6:30 PM. Tours last approximately 1.5 hours. Call 923-6869 ext. 85503, at least three weeks in advance.

Entrance and all the services at the City Museum are free.

GAMM (Municipal Merida Art Gallery)
Located within the City of Merida Museum, this space was opened in November 2007 to promote, diffuse and commercialize the multiple artistic expressions of Merida’s art community. With this gallery, the local artists, Mexican and foreign living here in Merida, have a space to show and sell their pieces.
